Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) work differently from traditional automatics, and that means they need different care. If your vehicle has a CVT, here’s what our licensed specialists want you to know about keeping it running properly.
How a CVT Is Different
Instead of fixed gears, a CVT uses a belt or chain running between two variable-diameter pulleys. As the pulleys change diameter, the effective drive ratio changes with them — continuously, and without the stepped shifts of a conventional automatic. That’s why a CVT-equipped vehicle pulls away smoothly and holds engine speed steady under acceleration rather than climbing and dropping through gears.
The design has real advantages in fuel economy and smoothness, but it also concentrates enormous load onto a small contact area between belt and pulley. That contact patch is held together by fluid pressure and friction characteristics that are engineered very precisely. It’s the reason CVT care differs so much from conventional automatic care: the fluid isn’t just protecting the components, it’s part of how they grip.
Which Vehicles Use Them
CVTs are common across Nissan, Subaru, Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi model lines, and they appear in plenty of crossovers and compacts that drivers assume are running a standard automatic. If you’re not certain what’s in your vehicle, it’s worth confirming before any fluid service — this is one of the more common causes of an expensive mistake.
Use the Right Fluid — No Exceptions
This is the single biggest factor in CVT longevity. CVT fluid is formulated specifically for the belt and pulley system, and its friction properties are what allow the belt to grip without slipping. Using the wrong fluid — including generic “universal” automatic transmission fluids that claim broad compatibility — can cause premature belt and pulley wear that no later service will undo. Always use the fluid specified for your vehicle, or ask us to confirm before any service.
Common CVT Issues to Watch For
- Shuddering or jerking at low speeds — often the earliest sign of fluid degradation or belt wear, and typically most noticeable pulling away from a stop or holding a steady low speed in traffic.
- Whining or humming noises that rise and fall with engine speed rather than road speed.
- Delayed response when accelerating from a stop, or a lag between pressing the throttle and the vehicle actually moving.
- Overheating under sustained highway driving, hot weather, or loaded conditions — particularly on a vehicle whose fluid hasn’t been serviced.
- Slipping or surging at highway speed, where engine speed rises without a matching increase in road speed.
- Warning lights or limp mode, where the vehicle restricts itself to protect the transmission.

Why Heat Is the Main Enemy
CVTs run hot by nature, and they’re less tolerant of sustained high temperature than conventional automatics. Heat thins the fluid, reduces the pressure holding the belt against the pulleys, and accelerates wear on both. Stop-and-go driving, hot summer highway runs, and towing all push temperatures up.
This matters for local drivers in particular. If most of your kilometres are short trips around Woodstock and Oxford County, the transmission spends a disproportionate share of its life in the conditions that are hardest on it — repeated low-speed pulls, traffic on Dundas Street, and cold starts through the winter. Manufacturers class that as severe service even though it doesn’t feel demanding from the driver’s seat.
Service Intervals
Many manufacturers specify CVT fluid service somewhere in the range of 60,000 to 100,000 km, and some describe the fill as lifetime. In practice, lifetime tends to mean the life of the warranty rather than the life of the vehicle, and shorter intervals are common advice for severe-service driving. Check your owner’s manual for your specific vehicle, and treat the severe-service column as the realistic one if your driving matches the description above.
Can a CVT Be Rebuilt?
Sometimes, depending on what failed and on parts availability for the specific unit. Belt and pulley damage is often extensive by the time symptoms are obvious, which pushes more CVT cases toward replacement than is typical with conventional automatics. Driving Habits That Extend CVT Life
- Ease away from stops rather than accelerating hard, which reduces belt slip at the point of highest load.
- Come to a complete stop before shifting between Drive and Reverse.
- Let the vehicle warm briefly in cold weather so fluid can circulate before it’s asked to carry load.
- Avoid towing unless the manufacturer explicitly rates your vehicle for it, and stay well within the rating if they do.
- Get shuddering or hesitation checked promptly — early intervention is far cheaper than the failure it precedes.
Common Questions
Is a shudder always serious?
Not always, but it’s never something to wait out. Shudder frequently starts with fluid condition, which is inexpensive to address — and expensive to ignore, because the same condition wears the belt and pulleys while you wait.
Can I check CVT fluid myself?
Many CVTs have no accessible dipstick and require a specific procedure and temperature to check level correctly. It’s worth having done properly rather than guessed at.
