Towing and heavy hauling put more stress on a transmission than almost anything else you can do to a vehicle. Whether you’re pulling a trailer through Southwestern Ontario or running a diesel truck for work, the extra load means extra heat — and heat is what shortens a transmission’s life. Here’s what our specialists want towing and diesel drivers to know.
Why Towing Is So Hard on a Transmission
Towing increases the load the transmission has to manage, which increases internal friction and heat. But the mechanism worth understanding is the torque converter. When you’re pulling a load, the converter spends far more time in slip — the state where the engine side and transmission side are turning at different speeds — and slip converts energy directly into heat. On a grade, or accelerating onto Highway 401 with a trailer behind you, that heat generation climbs sharply.
Automatic transmission fluid breaks down faster at higher temperatures. A widely used rule of thumb in the trade is that fluid life falls off dramatically once temperatures rise meaningfully above the normal operating range, and once the fluid degrades, it stops protecting internal components the way it should. Clutch material glazes, seals harden, and wear accelerates on everything the fluid touches.
Auxiliary Coolers Matter
If you tow regularly or drive a diesel truck, an auxiliary transmission cooler is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend the life of your transmission. Factory cooling is typically sized for the manufacturer’s expected duty cycle, which often assumes lighter and less frequent towing than working trucks actually see.
An added cooler gives the fluid somewhere to shed heat before it reaches the temperatures that cause damage. It’s a small upfront investment against a much larger repair bill down the road, and it’s the first upgrade we recommend to anyone whose towing is regular rather than occasional.
Use Tow/Haul Mode
If your vehicle has a tow/haul setting, use it whenever you’re loaded. It isn’t a gimmick. Tow/haul alters shift timing and shift firmness, holds gears longer to reduce hunting between ratios, and typically increases engine braking on descents so the brakes aren’t doing all the work. Reduced shift hunting means less clutch slip, and less clutch slip means less heat.
The same goes for locking out overdrive on long grades or in hilly terrain. Letting the transmission repeatedly shift in and out of its top gear under load generates far more heat than simply holding a lower gear.
Fluid Intervals Should Be Shorter
Standard fluid change intervals assume standard driving. Nearly every manufacturer publishes a separate severe-service schedule, and towing is explicitly listed in it — usually alongside heavy loads, sustained high temperatures, and frequent stop-and-go operation.
If you tow frequently, haul heavy loads, or drive a diesel used for work, your transmission fluid should be checked and changed considerably more often than the general guidance in our transmission fluid guide. Filter and pan inspection matters more here too, because a working transmission generates more debris than a lightly used one.
Watch for Heat-Related Symptoms
Slipping, delayed shifts, or a burning smell after towing are signs the transmission got hotter than it should have. Don’t dismiss these as normal towing behaviour — they aren’t. Other signals worth acting on:
- Shift quality that changes as a tow goes on, particularly harsh or delayed engagement once the vehicle is fully heated.
- A transmission temperature warning, or gauge readings notably higher than usual on the same route.
- Fluid that has darkened or thickened noticeably between services.
- Shuddering under load that wasn’t there when the vehicle was unloaded.

Diesel-Specific Considerations
Diesel trucks generate more torque, and torque is exactly what the transmission has to manage on every shift. Peak torque arrives lower in the rev range than it does on a gas engine, which means the transmission is handling substantial load from just off idle — the same point at which the converter is slipping most.
Combined with towing or heavy-duty use, this makes routine inspection especially important for diesel-driven vehicles — not just when something feels wrong, but as regular preventive maintenance. If the truck earns its keep, treat transmission service as part of running cost rather than something to defer.
Know Your Ratings
Tow ratings account for the whole system — cooling, gearing, brakes and structure — not just engine output. Loading to the edge of a rating, or beyond it, puts the transmission at the far end of what it was designed to absorb. Tongue weight and load distribution matter as well, since a poorly balanced trailer changes how the drivetrain is loaded on every acceleration.

Should I install a transmission temperature gauge?
If you tow regularly and your vehicle doesn’t have one, it’s among the most useful additions you can make. It turns an invisible problem into something you can see and respond to before damage occurs.
Does towing void anything?
Towing within your vehicle’s rating is normal use. What tends to cause trouble is towing beyond the rating, or towing on a severe-service schedule while maintaining on a normal-service one.
