What Happens During a Transmission Diagnostic Check

“Transmission problems” isn’t a diagnosis — it’s a symptom. Before any repair is recommended, our ATRA and ATSG-certified specialists run a proper diagnostic check to find out exactly what’s going on. Here’s what that process actually looks like.

1. Talking Through the Symptoms

We start by asking what you’ve noticed — slipping, noise, warning lights, leaks — and, just as importantly, when it happens. Cold or warm? Under load or coasting? At a specific speed, or in a specific gear? Intermittently, or every time?

These details matter more than most drivers expect. A shudder that only appears once the vehicle is fully warmed up points somewhere quite different from one that shows up on a cold start. 2. Scanning for Codes

Modern transmissions are computer-controlled, so we connect diagnostic equipment to pull any stored trouble codes and read live sensor data. This narrows down whether the issue is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

Worth understanding: a code identifies a circuit or a condition the computer noticed — it does not name a failed part. A code indicating a shift solenoid performance fault might come from the solenoid itself, from wiring, from low fluid pressure, or from mechanical wear elsewhere producing a symptom the computer interprets that way. The code narrows the search. It doesn’t end it.

Live data is often more revealing than the stored code. Watching commanded gear against actual gear ratio, line pressure, and transmission temperature while the vehicle is running tells us how the unit is behaving rather than just what it complained about.

3. Checking Fluid Condition and Level

Fluid tells its own story. Colour, smell, and level can point to overheating, contamination, or a leak long before a code gets thrown. 4. Road Testing

Codes and fluid checks only go so far. A road test lets our technicians feel how the transmission shifts under real load and confirm what the diagnostic data is suggesting.

We look for shift timing and quality through the full range, torque converter lockup behaviour, engagement into Drive and Reverse, and how the unit behaves both cold and at full operating temperature. Around Woodstock we have easy access to both stop-and-go streets and Highway 401, which matters — some faults only appear at sustained highway speed, and others only in low-speed traffic.

5. Physical Inspection

Depending on what the first steps turn up, we may inspect linkages, seals, mounts, cooler lines, the pan, and the valve body for wear or damage that a scan tool won’t catch. External leaks get traced to their source rather than just noted, since topping up fluid without finding the leak only delays the same failure.

Why “Just Clear the Code” Isn’t a Fix

Clearing a code removes the record of the fault, not the fault. The light will return — usually within a few drive cycles — and in the meantime the condition that triggered it has been running unchecked. Worse, clearing codes erases freeze-frame data that would have told us the exact conditions when the fault occurred, which makes the next diagnosis harder rather than easier.

How long does a diagnostic take?

It depends on the symptom. A straightforward complaint with clear codes moves quickly; an intermittent fault that only appears under specific conditions takes longer, because it has to be reproduced before it can be confirmed.

Do I need to leave the vehicle?

Often not, but it helps for intermittent issues where a longer road test or a full heat cycle is needed to reproduce the fault.

Can I keep driving in the meantime?
