CVT Transmissions: Common Issues and Maintenance Tips

Continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) work differently from traditional automatics, and that means they need different care. If your vehicle has a CVT, here’s what our licensed specialists want you to know about keeping it running properly.

How a CVT Is Different

Instead of fixed gears, a CVT uses a belt or chain system running between variable-diameter pulleys to deliver a smooth, stepless range of ratios. That design means the fluid, cooling needs, and wear points are different from a conventional automatic.

Use the Right Fluid — No Exceptions

This is the single biggest factor in CVT longevity. CVT fluid is formulated specifically for the belt and pulley system, and using the wrong fluid — including some generic “universal” automatic transmission fluids — can cause premature belt or pulley wear. Always use the fluid specified for your vehicle, or ask us to confirm before any service.

Common CVT Issues to Watch For

  • Shuddering or jerking at low speeds — often an early sign of fluid degradation or belt wear.
  • Whining or humming noises that change with acceleration.
  • Delayed response when accelerating from a stop.
  • Overheating under sustained highway driving or hot weather, particularly if fluid hasn’t been serviced.

If you notice any of these, see our full guide to transmission warning signs.

Maintenance That Actually Helps

CVTs generally benefit from more frequent fluid checks than owners expect, since fluid condition has an outsized effect on how the belt and pulleys perform. Avoid aggressive acceleration from a stop, which puts extra strain on the belt system, and get any shuddering or hesitation checked promptly rather than waiting.

Not Sure What’s Under the Hood?

If you’re not sure whether your vehicle has a CVT or what fluid it needs, don’t guess — ask us. Bring your vehicle to our Woodstock shop, our head office and largest service centre, or contact us with questions if Brantford or Simcoe is more convenient. More guidance is on our Transmission Tips hub.
