What Happens During a Transmission Diagnostic Check

“Transmission problems” isn’t a diagnosis — it’s a symptom. Before any repair is recommended, our ATRA and ATSG-certified specialists run a proper diagnostic check to find out exactly what’s going on. Here’s what that process actually looks like.

1. Talking Through the Symptoms

We start by asking what you’ve noticed — slipping, noise, warning lights, leaks — and when it happens. See our list of common transmission warning signs if you’re not sure how to describe what you’re experiencing.

2. Scanning for Codes

Modern transmissions are computer-controlled, so we connect diagnostic equipment to pull any stored trouble codes and live sensor data. This narrows down whether the issue is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

3. Checking Fluid Condition and Level

Fluid tells its own story. Colour, smell, and level can point to overheating, contamination, or a leak long before a code gets thrown.

4. Road Testing

Codes and fluid checks only go so far. A road test lets our technicians feel how the transmission shifts under real load and confirm what the diagnostic data is suggesting.

5. Physical Inspection

Depending on what the first steps turn up, we may inspect linkages, seals, the pan, and the valve body for wear or damage that a scan tool won’t catch.

What You Get at the End

A clear explanation of what’s actually wrong, what your options are, and what they cost — before any work begins. If a repair is needed, we’ll walk you through whether a rebuild or replacement makes more sense for your vehicle.

Book a Diagnostic

If your transmission isn’t behaving the way it should, get it looked at properly. Visit our Woodstock shop, our head office and largest service centre, or contact us to book an appointment at Brantford or Simcoe instead. More preventive guidance is available on our Transmission Tips hub.
