The story begins in 1982, when GM introduced the 700R4 transmission (later renamed 4L60). This was GM’s first automatic with an integrated overdrive gear, designed to reduce engine RPM at cruising speeds and improve fuel economy—two major concerns during the fuel-conscious 1980s.
Used in popular models like the Camaro, Corvette, Blazer, and Silverado, the 700R4 was a four-speed automatic that struck a balance between power and efficiency. By the late 1980s, refinements in materials and hydraulics made it far more durable and dependable.
In 1993, GM transitioned to the 4L60E, an electronically controlled version of the 700R4. This upgrade replaced mechanical shift linkages with computer-managed solenoids, allowing smoother, smarter gear changes.
The 4L60E became a workhorse, powering countless vehicles—from the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban to the Pontiac Firebird and GMC Sierra. Later, the 4L65E and 4L70E introduced stronger internal components to handle higher horsepower applications.
By the mid-2000s, GM made a major leap forward with the 6L80 and 6L90 transmissions—six-speed automatics that improved acceleration, fuel economy, and towing performance. These units became standard in vehicles like the Camaro SS, Silverado 1500, and Cadillac CTS-V.
The 8L90 followed, offering even more refined shifting and better highway efficiency, paving the way for today’s advanced 10-speed automatics, co-developed with Ford, which deliver seamless power delivery and improved drivability.
